What the analyst argued

Barclays initiated Achillion at Underweight with an $8 target despite encouraging early hepatitis C data, because the market had fundamentally changed: Gilead, Merck and AbbVie were launching all-oral regimens with 6-8 week cures, the eligible US patient pool was shrinking, and discounting to win share no longer worked. Even a successful 2018 launch with ~$1B peak sales, valued by a risk-adjusted NPV sum-of-the-parts, left the stock 35% above fair value. A takeout was seen as the main upside but less likely given the market dynamics.
