What Is High-Frequency Trading?
High-frequency trading is a form of algorithmic trading defined by extreme speed and turnover. Its signatures include decision-making measured in microseconds, servers co-located inside exchange data centers to shave transmission time, very high ratios of orders submitted to trades executed, and holding periods so short that positions are typically flat by the end of each day. Humans design the strategies, but machines make every individual trading decision.
The field emerged in the 2000s as U.S. markets went fully electronic, and it scaled rapidly: by most estimates HFT has accounted for around half of U.S. equity volume for more than a decade. Leading firms include Citadel Securities, Virtu Financial, Jump Trading, and Hudson River Trading, many of which began as small proprietary shops and grew into central pillars of market liquidity.
How HFT Strategies Work
The largest bucket is electronic market making — continuously quoting bids and offers across thousands of securities and earning the spread while managing inventory in real time. Other approaches include statistical arbitrage across correlated instruments, latency arbitrage that exploits the milliseconds it takes prices to update across venues, and event-driven strategies that react to news feeds and order-flow signals faster than any human could. Each trade earns a sliver — often a fraction of a cent per share — and volume does the rest.
Because speed is the edge, firms wage a literal arms race over infrastructure. They have laid straighter fiber routes, then replaced fiber with microwave towers between the Chicago futures markets and New Jersey equity data centers because signals travel faster through air than glass, and now use custom hardware that processes market data in nanoseconds. Every advance shrinks the window of opportunity for everyone, compressing industry profits toward those with the best technology.
Why HFT Matters
HFT's rise coincided with dramatically cheaper trading: bid-ask spreads in liquid U.S. stocks compressed to a penny or less, benefiting every investor who buys or sells. Critics counter that the liquidity is fair-weather — quotes that vanish precisely when markets need them most. The flash crash of May 6, 2010, when the Dow plunged roughly 1,000 points and rebounded within minutes, crystallized fears about markets moving at machine speed, and regulators have since added circuit breakers and tightened oversight.
For students, HFT firms represent one of the most selective and highly paid entry points in finance, recruiting heavily from math, computer science, and physics programs rather than traditional finance tracks. Interviews emphasize probability puzzles, algorithmic thinking, and coding under time pressure. Even for candidates headed to banks or asset managers, understanding how HFT shapes execution quality and market microstructure has become baseline knowledge for any markets-facing seat.
